Why “Kuumba Owl”? – The Meaning Behind Our Name

When we chose the name Kuumba Owl, we knew it had to hold the heart of who we are: a collective of artists and artisans, rooted in African soil, inspired by nature, and committed to thoughtful creation.

Kuumba – The Spirit of Creativity

Kuumba is a Swahili word meaning creativity, and it comes from the seventh principle of Kwanzaa. But it’s more than just making things—Kuumba challenges us to leave the world more beautiful than we found it. That’s the energy we carry into everything we create.

Each item—whether it’s a doll, a journal, beadwork, or a hat—is made with purpose. We use what we have, honour what we know, and imagine what could be. We repurpose scraps, celebrate imperfections, and treat craft as a powerful form of storytelling and healing.

Owl – A Symbol of Wisdom and Watchfulness

The owl is a timeless symbol across many cultures. It represents wisdom, intuition, and the ability to see in the dark—qualities that speak to the quiet strength of creators and makers. In many African traditions, the owl is also a messenger or guide, reminding us to listen deeply, observe carefully, and move with meaning.

We chose the owl to represent our collective vision—eyes wide open, rooted in tradition, but always ready to adapt and soar into something new.

Together – Kuumba Owl

Together, Kuumba Owl represents our commitment to thoughtful, soulful creation. It’s a name that holds both light and depth—creativity that honours the past, and wisdom that shapes the future. It reminds us that what we make, and how we make it, matters.

This name is our promise to you: that every item you see, hold, or wear from Kuumba Owl carries more than beauty—it carries intention, story, and spirit.

Thank you for being part of the flight.
