Kuumba Owl is a creative collective of artists and artisans who share a deep love for handmade craftsmanship, community, and nature. Rooted in South Africa, we come from diverse cultural backgrounds, each bringing our own traditions, techniques, and perspectives to the work we do.

Our name reflects our values:
“Kuumba”, a Swahili word meaning creativity, and the owl, a timeless symbol of wisdom. Together, they represent our commitment to thoughtful, purposeful creation.

We specialize in handcrafted items made with care using locally sourced and manufactured materials — from textiles, glass and handmade beads, wood and handmade paper. We design our own patterns and develop our unique methods. Every piece we make is a reflection of the land, culture, and stories that inspire us.

Nature is at the heart of what we do — especially owls, whose quiet presence and grace guide our creative process. Our work honors the natural world and supports sustainable, small-batch production that values quality over quantity.

At Kuumba Owl, we believe in the power of making things by hand, in the beauty of imperfection, and in the connection between people, place, and craft.

Marette

Creativity runs deep in Marette’s roots. Inspired from a young age by her mother—her first mentor—she grew up surrounded by texture, colour, and craft. From knitting and sewing to woodcarving and gardening, her mother’s love for making things by hand shaped Marette’s creative journey.

She studied Art and Fashion Design and began her career designing wedding and ball gowns. Today, Marette works as a freelance photographer, but continues to explore a wide range of creative outlets, including painting, mosaics, cosplay, and upcycled art.

Teaching sewing, arts, and crafts is especially close to her heart. For Marette, sharing these skills is a powerful way to uplift and empower women—nurturing confidence, creativity, and independence.

As the founder of Kuumba Owl, Marette brings together her artistic vision, lifelong love of making, and commitment to building a creative community rooted in culture, collaboration, and purpose.

Martha

Martha Lekalakala grew up on a farm in the former Bophuthatswana, where she was shaped by a community that valued education, hard work, and upliftment. She began her sewing journey in the busy garment factories of Babelegi during the 1970s, quickly mastering a wide range of techniques and materials. By the early 1990s, she had become an expert seamstress, collaborating with top designers in Pretoria.

Today, Martha is the co-founder of Kuumba Owl, where she brings decades of experience and a rare talent for intricate, high-skill sewing. Her hands give life to many of the collective’s most detailed creations—dolls, wearable art, and accessories—all stitched with care and precision.

A devoted single mother and grandmother, Martha helped support her family and educate the next generation through the work of her hands. She is deeply grateful to God for every step of her journey and continues to dream boldly, with hopes of one day owning a home of her own. Her story is one of quiet strength, faith, and creative mastery.

Margie

Margie Smith has been a crafter and artist her entire life, working across many mediums—from drawing and painting to sewing, scroll saw work, and beadwork. Growing up in the rural Eastern Cape, her creativity was shaped by both nature and necessity, grounding her deep respect for handmade traditions.

As a member of Kuumba Owl, Margie brings a modern interpretation to traditional Xhosa beadwork. She is highly recognised for her exceptional skill and attention to detail in this art form, helping to keep it alive, relevant, and deeply desirable.

Margie also has a lifelong love for wildlife, especially rhino conservation—a cause close to her heart. Her hand-painted rhino t-shirts will soon be available in the Kuumba Owl online store, blending artistic expression with advocacy for South Africa’s endangered species.

Palesa

Palesa Lekalakala holds a degree in Human Resources, but like many young South Africans facing high unemployment, she is currently volunteering at a rural school while building her creative future. A proud member of the Bakgatla tribe, Palesa brings her cultural heritage, vibrant energy, and deep curiosity to everything she does.

Passionate about sustainability, she loves recycling and upcycling materials into something beautiful and meaningful. As part of the Kuumba Owl collective, Palesa is learning hands-on creative skills while also modelling our wearable pieces with joy and authenticity.

As Kuumba Owl grows, Palesa will take on a key leadership role in managing the collective—proof of her dedication to community, culture, and craft.

Sandra

Kuumba Owl warmly welcomes a new artisan to the collective — Sandra from Wired Minds. Sandra and her husband have been crafting exquisite wire and bead creations for nearly 15 years, blending skill, patience, and imagination into every handcrafted piece. We welcome her with open wings, and may our journey together be prosperous and productive.
